Meet Matt Gentry

Matt Gentry is a lifelong Alabamian, a proud Marine veteran, and a dedicated public servant who has spent his life protecting the people of his community. Now, after more than two decades in law enforcement and ten years as Cullman County’s Sheriff, Matt is answering a new calling: to serve on the Alabama Public Service Commission.

“My whole life has been about protecting and serving the people who’ve given me the honor to serve them,” says Matt. “Whether it’s a family farm or a small business, folks deserve a leader who shows up, listens, and fights for what’s right.”

Born and raised in Cullman County, Matt learned early the values of hard work, faith, and integrity. Right out of high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, embracing the call to service with courage and commitment. Upon returning home, he began his law enforcement career as a deputy sheriff, laying the foundation for a lifetime of service.

In 2014, Matt was elected Sheriff of Cullman County—the youngest in the state at the time—and he has since led the department with transparency, compassion, and a strong moral compass. Under his leadership, the Sheriff’s Office has become a model of community engagement, hosting thousands of public meetings, safety classes, and outreach programs.

Matt’s decision to run for the Alabama Public Service Commission comes from what he calls a God-given conviction—a deep belief that now is the time to stand up for Alabama families in a new way. The Commission regulates utilities like electricity and gas, ensuring that people across the state have access to reliable service at fair prices. Matt believes that leadership on the Commission must reflect the needs of everyday Alabamians—not special interests.

“This isn’t about politics—it’s about doing right by the people,” Matt says. “The Lord put it on my heart to serve Alabama in a new way. I’ve prayed on it, I’ve talked it over with my family, and I’m ready to get to work.”

If elected, Matt will bring the same transparency and accessibility to the PSC that he’s known for as Sheriff. He’s committed to an open-door policy, ensuring that every Alabamian—not just a select few—has a voice. He pledges to travel the state, meet with constituents face-to-face, and make himself available to the people he serves.
